An Egregiously Ambitious Start
All things must start somewhere, and here’s where this will begin. I have several plans where to take this notion – this ‘Wolf Linux’ notion of mine, some of thing more interesting some of them less so. It’s hard to say what will or will not come, but the only way to make something happen is to do. So the general skeleton is up. Next is the meat.
The primary goal with this entire endeavor is try and centralize (I know it’s a bad word, to an extent) some of the bits and bobs I’ve gathered. This, since I’ve (FINALLY!) cut my own desktop environment to a Linux distro (Manjaro with XFCE at this juncture).. though I explored other options in the interim. May the results of this make at least someone’s journey a spot easier than my own in that adjustment.
One of the big gaps for me was that entire ‘I want to game and I refuse to dual boot’ lines. Well, Wine & Proton (courtesy of Steam and Codeweavers) there’s a whole bunch more support. Sure it isn’t perfect, sure there are gaps – but on the note with Codeweavers, take a look at Get CrossOver if you’re running into hard lines on Wine or Proton.
Categorically it’s crazy to me – effectively Codeweavers are their own biggest competitors as they feed back their updates into Wine & Proton which are free offerings. As I understand it CrossOver has some more special sauce to it beyond Wine & Proton. Still, that’s something I’d think you’d only see in an Open-Source sort of sphere. Frankly, it’s all dazzling and amazing to me. I really put off getting into the active usage of this scene for too long.
I’ll also be adding my own research as I go along – hopefully find some cool stuff like I said that’ll help make things easier for others down the line. Worst case? Well, at least I tried. Ultimately my goal is to help the momentum to cut down the elephant in the room of desktop environments. Little by little, indeed. To that I must admit, minus the final nail in the coffin of the 11th ‘edition’ pending of such, I wouldn’t have finally just spat and said enough.
